Biography

 

German soprano Lena Kutzner is known for her work in the German and late-Romantic repertoire, with a particular focus on major roles by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.

 

The current season opens with a revival of Mozart’s "Don Giovanni" at Staatstheater Meiningen. In September, she returns to Wartburg Castle for Wagner’s "Tannhäuser", followed in October by a new production of Weber’s "Der Freischütz", in which she sings Agathe. In February 2026, she will make her debut as the Daughter in Hindemith’s "Cardillac".

 

During the 2024/2025 season, she made her Korean debut at the National Opera Seoul as Elisabeth in Wagner’s "Tannhäuser", a role she later reprised in May at Wartburg Castle. In February, she made her highly acclaimed debut as Isolde in Wagner’s "Tristan und Isolde" at Theater Lübeck, followed by further performances of the role from April at Staatstheater Meiningen.

 

From 2021/22 to 2023/24, Lena Kutzner was a permanent member of the ensemble at Staatstheater Meiningen, where she performed a wide-ranging repertoire including Senta, Elsa, Elisabeth, and Ada (Die Feen) by Richard Wagner, Marietta/Marie (Die tote Stadt) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, as well as Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

 

In October 2022, she made her debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Senta in Wagner’s "Der fliegende Holländer" and at Theater Lübeck as Elsa in "Lohengrin". During the 2023/2024 season, she also debuted there as Chrysothemis in Richard Strauss’ "Elektra in a production by Brigitte Fassbaender.

 

Her first permanent engagement was at Landestheater Neustrelitz, where she appeared in roles including Nedda, Angelina, Suzuki, Nancy, Donna Elvira, and Hänsel. She subsequently joined Staatstheater Cottbus (including Donna Elvira in "Don Giovanni", "Frau Luna" in the title role, and the soprano solo in Haydn’s "The Creation") and Theater Chemnitz (Gerhilde in Wagner’s "Die Walküre"; the children’s opera "Bei der Feuerwehr wird der Kaffee kalt").

 

Lena Kutzner began her musical career as a soloist with the girls’ choir of her hometown Hanover, where she received her first musical and vocal training with Prof. Gudrun Schröfel. She studied voice at the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover with Prof. Carol Richardson-Smith and is currently coached by Romana Noack.
